90% reduction in time spent setting up lab environments
In 2010, Security Risk Advisors’ founders set out to create a highly-specialized consulting firm which could continually develop solutions to cybersecurity’s emerging problems. Technical yet engaging, they have become an organization with a passion for recruiting and training the next generation of cybersecurity practitioners – they need to be even better.
Security Risk Advisors faced a major challenge with the amount of time they were spending developing training labs in their organization.
The costs and licensing headaches were made worse by frequent outages and difficulties keeping up with new attack techniques to introduce into the lab environments to keep them relevant.
With lab environments a key part of their recruitment process and beyond, they engaged with Hack The Box for a solution.
Hack The Box’s Professional Labs stood out for the team at SRA not only for the sophistication and variety of continually updated content, but the ease and speed in which they could be deployed.
“We’d easily spend more than 100 hours setting up a single lab before HTB, not including everything that went along with it like licensing and hardware or cloud costs. Now it’s done in no time, with content updates every month.”
- Dan Astor, Principal Scientist, SRA
This helped them scale how they supported their teams and processes, from recruitment to training and team-building.
SRA uses the Professional Labs to assess a candidate’s ability to perform a variety of skills.
“Since the Professional Labs are not disclosed online, candidates cannot look for a direct answer to a question. We also have a candidate write up a sample report based on the findings from the lab.”
- Dan Astor, Principal Scientist, SRA
There are multiple labs available to run, and ranging from beginner to advanced difficulty.
SRA develops and curates their new team member training around the Professional Labs.
“Instead of having individual systems they access, they had an entire lab which could be used throughout the training.”
- Dan Astor, Principal Scientist, SRA
The team also uses Academy for Business to upskill team members in the latest attack techniques outside their Professional Lab environments.
SRA boosts morale by having team based CTFs using the Professional Lab instances.
“Teams are split up to give individuals the opportunity to work with others and develop skills. Prizes and swag were awarded to the winning teams.”
- Dan Astor, Principal Scientist, SRA
